2015-12-12
Game SummaryThe Sentinels made a statement last night with a 6 to 5 overtime victory over Hendricken. Smithfield opened up early with a goal by David Goolgasion assisted by Varin and Ragosta just 53 seconds into the contest and Hendricken knew they were in for a fight. Hendricken answered back at 6:08 into the period and tied it at one. The game was back and forth with each team battling for the next goal. At 11:37 into the period Smithfield lit the lamp, Ragosta from Goolgasion and Varin to take a 2-1 lead. However, Hendricken answered back 33 seconds later to tie the score at two. The first period ended 2 to 2. The Sentinels went to the box 2:33 into the second period and Hendricken was on the man advantage. Smithfield’s aggressive penalty killing proved to be too much when Goolgasion stole the puck and was able to get it by the Hendricken goalie and the Sentinels went up 3 to 2. With 7:10 left in the period Chris Paiva and Matty Simons were able to break lose and with tick-tac passing Simons looked to have the shot but slid it over to Paiva who knocked it in for his first varsity goal and a Sentinel 4-2 lead. The momentum was clearly in the favor of Smithfield and Hendricken made the goalie switch. But this is Hendricken and they do not quit. Hendricken got closer 4-3 on a breakaway goal with 2:47 left in the period. Then with a huge momentum switch Hendricken scored two goals with less than a minute left in the second and took a 5-4 lead into the locker room. The third period was a battle with some great back and forth hockey as the period wound down Smithfield pulled the goalie with about a minute left to play and Charlie Walsh got the nod as the extra skater this proved to be the right call as Walsh from Goolgasion and Ragosta, knocked the loose puck by the goalie with 17 ticks left on the clock and to overtime they went. The Sentinels came out flying and Goolgasion was able to control the puck behind the net, sneak out on the goalie’s left side and put it by his right shoulder for the OT game winner.
Goolgasion finished the night with 3 goals and 2 assist to lead the Sentinel scoring.
Next up for the Boys Friday December 18 Lasalle at Smithfield and December 19th Hendricken at Smithfield.
